Selfie Wall 2.0 · 2025

Originally performed at the StARTup Art Fair in San Francisco in 2025, this expansion transforms the Selfie Wall into an immersive space, inviting attendees to walk through layers of fabric, symbolizing the finding of identity and digital misinterpretation.

The original installation features three blue velvet curtain panels embroidered with autocorrected names (e.g., “pretty” for Priti, “Paypal” for Payal), emphasizing biases in technology. It is constructed with a curtain rod (84” x 80”), weighted sandbags, and embroidery floss. During the exhibition I actively collect and embroider autocorrected names onto the Selfie Wall.

This expansion transforms the Selfie Wall into an immersive space, inviting attendees to walk through layers of fabric, symbolizing the finding of identity and digital misinterpretation. It was originally performed at the StARTup Art Fair in San Francisco in 2025. The swaying, interactive fabrics foster movement and reflection while reinforcing the theme of technological bias.

The choice of blue for the material is a visual nod to the Blue Screen of Death- the threat of ending our connection to our social media and our identities. It is also a universally flattering shade for selfie taking. The embroidery will be white, also to reference the Windows color palette and for the sake of contrast. The medium itself is a contrast to the speed of our connected lives- the embroidery is a time consuming process, as is the collecting of autocorrected names. This will great a crescendo to the event, priming people to participate in the donation and sharing process.
